Michael Howard, the past leader of Britain’s Conservative Party, served as a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom for nearly three decades. Mr. Howard has been a member of Lightbridge Corporation’s Strategic Advisory Council since 2006.
An influential politician, Mr. Howard led the Conservative Party in the 2005 general election, which was the first election in more than twenty years in which the party gained a significant number of seats. A noted figure on the international stage, he has taken a leadership role in British and global issues, including in the energy sector. Mr. Howard is a prominent supporter of emerging energy technologies and of “greener, cleaner technologies for saving and generating energy,” as he once wrote. He has served in several high-profile government posts, including as secretary of state for the environment, in which capacity he persuaded the U.S. delegation to participate in the Earth Summit in Rio, and as home secretary, which is Britain’s top law enforcement official. At various times Mr. Howard served as shadow chancellor, shadow secretary of economic affairs, and shadow secretary of foreign affairs. Mr. Howard was elected to Parliament in 1983; he served as a Member of Parliament until April 2010. Prior to his career in government, Mr. Howard was a lawyer for nearly two decades, achieving the rank of Queen’s Counsel in 1982. Since leaving politics, Mr. Howard has pursued a variety of international business interests. He is chairman of Northern Racing Limited, chairman of Luup Limited, deputy chairman of Entree Gold Inc., and senior independent director of Helphire Group PLC; he also serves on the Advisory Council of Hermitage Global Fund.
Mr. Howard was educated at Peterhouse, the oldest and smallest college of the University of Cambridge, where he was elected president of the Cambridge Union Society.
