Hans Blix, Ph.D.

Senior Advisor

A senior advisor to Lightbridge Corporation since early 2008, Dr. Hans Blix has been at the forefront of international nuclear issues for decades; he is one of the most trusted and sought-after experts in the nuclear field. In February 2010, the government of the United Arab Emirates appointed Dr. Blix to head a nine-member International Advisory Board of energy specialists to guide the country's growing nuclear power program.

The former foreign minister of Sweden, Dr. Blix served for sixteen years as the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, where he was responsible for overhauling the agency's inspection system to adhere to more stringent standards. From 2000 to 2003, Dr. Blix was chief weapons inspector and executive chair of the U.N. Monitoring, Verification, and Inspection Commission in Iraq. Since 2003 he has chaired the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission, an independent international body; he is also chairman of the Assembly of Donor States for the Chernobyl Shelter Fund. Prior to his work with the United Nations, Dr. Blix advised Sweden's Ministry for Foreign Affairs on matters of international law. For twenty years he was a member of Sweden's delegation to the U.N. General Assembly, and for sixteen years he was a member of Sweden’s delegation to the Conference on Disarmament. Dr. Blix, the recipient of numerous honorary degrees and awards (including the World Nuclear Association's Gold Medal for distinguished service in nuclear affairs), has also authored books on disarmament and international law.

Dr. Blix studied at the University of Uppsala, at Columbia University, and at Cambridge University, where he earned his Ph.D.; he also earned a Doctor of Laws degree from Stockholm University, where he then worked as an associate professor of international law.
